NEW ART SUBMISSIONS
The attached painting was done by my son, Caleb McElreath, a 9-year-old student at Jordan Lake School of the Arts. Caleb is on the autism spectrum, an avid artist and musician. His artistic talents were spotted and nurtured early by his kindergarten teacher at the Little School of Hillsborough, Deborah Pollard.
HeARTS for AutismWorking with persons on the Autistic Spectrum, HeARTs for Autism ® encourages creative expression. As the person works with an art project, there are opportunities for them to integrate Sensory needs, interact socially with our volunteers, and express themselves in ways that transcend the limits they might otherwise experience daily with their autism. Many times art can “say” something that the person otherwise could not “tell” us. The sibling program uses the creative time to provide peer support for the sisters and brothers, while allowing them to explore what they might be thinking or feeling. The parenting program provides much needed nurturing. Creative expression is used with the parents along with stress reduction techniques, and they have chance to network and support one another. HeARTs uses the artwork to then educate others about the Autism Spectrum Disorder and to advocate for improved, integrated services for ASD persons and families. Painting, drawing, writing, music, drama and other forms of arts are expressed beautifully by and through individuals with disabilities in Keri Bower's new film, ARTS. — Sharing the power of the arts used to improve social, emotional, cognitive, expressive, and life skills in individuals with challenges is at the heart of this glimpse into pure talent demonstrated by people with disabilities. ARTS explores the possibilities of creating commercial and personal successes for young artists with various disabilities when encouraged and paired with professional artists working in a field closely related to the artists’ area of talent. From fine art, including painting, drawing and photography, to writing, music, drama and other forms of art, the film explores how the arts can create invaluable opportunities for development and growth for persons with disabilities. From social and life skill development, to self-esteem and self-awareness, the film concludes that for those with artistic gifts, career goals can be achieved.
